Building economic well-being in Year 4
This RSE & PSHE scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering the Year 4 economic well-being unit, designed to extend pupils’ financial knowledge, strengthen money management skills, and broaden awareness of career possibilities. It builds on prior learning about payment methods, budgeting, saving, and job stereotypes.
The video explains how pupils will explore the idea of good value for money, critically assessing purchases by considering factors such as price and quality. Relatable examples are used to show that value for money is about making informed choices rather than affluence. Pupils will also learn the importance of tracking income and spending, developing an understanding of why budgeting is useful. Teachers are advised to keep activities hypothetical and ensure conversations remain theoretical rather than personal.
Lessons also focus on keeping money safe, introducing age-appropriate discussions about security measures. As the unit progresses, pupils will explore how career choices are influenced by different factors, why people may change jobs during their lifetime. The variety of pathways careers can take. Sensitivity is recommended when discussing these topics, as they may touch on personal family circumstances.
The final lesson examines workplace stereotypes and strategies for challenging them, supporting pupils to think critically about inclusivity and diversity. Completing this unit equips children with the skills to make informed financial decisions, recognise risks, and reflect on career pathways, preparing them for the Year 5 unit on borrowing, online spending, and equality in the workplace.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE economic wellbeing teacher videos, designed to build financial awareness, decision-making skills, and early career understanding.
