What is street art?

This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces pupils to the world of street art – public artwork found on buildings, walls and other outdoor spaces. It encourages pupils to explore the impact of art in public places.

In this unit, children examine the relationship between art, its audience and its location. They develop their understanding of identity, symbolism and artistic intention, and reflect on their own opinions. The lessons include opportunities for discussion about what art is for and how it can be used to send a message.

Pupils look at a variety of street art styles and consider both graffiti and permission-based art. They learn that artists like Banksy may be using guerrilla art to provoke thought and inspire action. Children are supported to explore powerful environmental themes and channel their ideas into their own street art designs.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Drawing: Expressing ideas unit.
