What is street art?

This Art and Design scheme of work video equips teachers to guide pupils through thought-provoking discussions about street art — a powerful and often polarising genre. From graffiti and guerrilla art to large-scale commissioned murals, the video helps teachers explore how context, audience, and purpose influence how art is made and received. Many pupils may view graffiti negatively at first, considering it vandalism.

Teachers are supported in challenging these perceptions by introducing key terminology and encouraging deeper questions about graffiti. The video encourages teachers to foster empathy and understanding, particularly when pupils are invited to express their own messages about global issues through sketches and designs. This process reinforces art’s power as a tool for expression and social commentary.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Drawing: Expressing ideas unit.
