What is street art?
This Art and design video equips teachers to guide Year 6 pupils through thought-provoking discussions about street art, a powerful and often polarising genre. From graffiti and guerrilla art to large-scale commissioned murals, the video helps teachers explore how context, audience and purpose influence how art is made and received.
Many pupils may view graffiti negatively at first, considering it vandalism. Teachers are supported in challenging these perceptions by introducing key terminology and encouraging deeper questions about graffiti. The video encourages teachers to foster empathy and understanding, particularly when the pupils are invited to express their own messages about global issues through sketches and designs. This process reinforces art’s power as a tool for expression and social commentary.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art drawing videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children explore creative techniques and express their ideas through art.
