Mastering the drag back

This PE scheme of work video introduces teachers to the drag back technique, helping Key stage 2 pupils develop better ball control and agility in football lessons. It demonstrates how to use the sole of the foot to pull the ball back and change direction, progressing from simple backward rolls to V-shaped movements and full turns. Teachers will be guided in supporting pupils as they build confidence, control, and coordination, with the option to challenge more confident learners by practising with both feet and adding a fake pass before turning.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s PE Football resources. It simplifies the process, including fun, game-based activities such as “Bib Tag” and a “Three v Two” match that allow pupils to use the drag back in more realistic play. The lesson supports skill development, spatial awareness and decision-making, helping pupils incorporate this key move into their dribbling and attacking play with growing fluency and confidence.
