Sifting skills in primary cooking

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skill of sifting, helping the children learn how to aerate flour and remove lumps to achieve light and fluffy baked goods. It explores correct techniques, common challenges and ways to support the children handle a sieve confidently.

The video demonstrates how to prepare for sifting by ensuring the bowl, flour and sieve are dry and clean. The children learn to hold the sieve securely, either gripping the handle firmly or resting it on the edge of the bowl for stability. Teachers are shown how to guide the children using a gentle, rhythmic tapping motion to sift flour evenly while preventing mess. The video also offers tips for troubleshooting, such as using a spoon to help the flour pass through when needed.

This video is part of our Cooking and nutrition resources. It simplifies food preparation techniques and tool use, helping teachers feel confident and prepared to support the children in developing sifting skills in the lessons and units below.
