Understanding product design

This Design and technology scheme of work video guides teachers in supporting the children to evaluate existing products to inspire innovation and deeper design thinking. It shows how to lead whole-class discussions that explore a product’s purpose, features, users and possible improvements, using a familiar example such as a pencil sharpener. Teachers are guided in modelling critical questioning and encouraging creative ideas, helping the children understand how real-world products evolve to meet user needs.

This video simplifies the evaluation process and builds teacher confidence to support the children in analysing existing designs and developing their own innovative ideas in the lesson and unit below.
