Creating 3D Structures

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a lesson where pupils explore how 2D shapes can be transformed into 3D forms.

The lesson begins with a discussion about sculpture. Pupils reflect on past experiences with materials like clay or junk modelling, but may not yet connect these with 3D art. This is a chance to address common misconceptions.

Pupils start by cutting simple shapes from card, then manipulating them to make 3D forms. They can use a range of techniques to do this. Rather than just using glue or tape, pupils are encouraged to explore joining methods by slotting shapes together. They then experiment with different combinations, testing how their pieces can be balanced to create a stable structure.
