Using a grid to scale images

This Art and Design scheme of work video supports pupils in learning how to scale drawings up or down using the traditional grid method – a skill used by artists to copy and enlarge their work accurately.

Pupils are introduced to the skill of transferring an image from one surface to another by drawing a grid over the original image and a second, larger grid on their blank page or canvas. By focusing on one square at a time, pupils are guided to carefully copy the marks and shapes within each section. This helps them keep proportions accurate, whether enlarging or shrinking the image.

This technique allows even complex images to be broken down into manageable parts and is a useful way to build confidence in drawing.
