Expression vision in drawings

This Art and Design scheme of work video supports the final lesson in Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Drawing: Expressing ideas unit, helping children transfer their mural designs onto a final piece of art.

Before mural artists begin painting, they carefully consider materials and techniques that will bring their message to life. Pupils are encouraged to do the same—choosing tools and media to match the textures, colours and marks they want to create.

The video demonstrates a range of materials: oil pastels for bold colour and blending, ready-mixed paint for washes or strong impact, sponges for a sprayed effect, and markers for sharp outlines. Charcoal and pencil are introduced for shading and depth, allowing for expressive, layered results.

Children are encouraged to keep experimenting in their sketchbooks—mixing materials, testing effects and exploring creative ideas before they begin their final piece.

This video encourages thoughtful selection, creativity and confidence in their art.
