Developing economic wellbeing in Year 3
This RSE & PSHE scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering the Year 3 economic well-being unit, designed to build pupils’ financial knowledge, deepen their understanding of money management, and broaden their awareness of career possibilities. It builds on earlier learning about obtaining money, needs versus wants, saving, and keeping money safe.
The video explains how pupils will explore different payment methods, weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of each in real-life scenarios. They will then be introduced to budgeting, learning how strategic financial planning supports goal-setting and decision-making. Teachers are encouraged to approach this topic with sensitivity, avoiding assumptions about pupils’ personal circumstances and fostering an environment of respect and financial privacy.
Lessons also address the emotional aspects of money, helping pupils to recognise and manage the wide range of feelings that money can generate. Teachers are advised to provide reassurance and emotional support, as discussions may link to pupils’ home experiences.
Later in the unit, children will investigate ethical spending, exploring how purchasing choices can affect the environment and local communities, and how consumers can contribute positively to sustainability and social good. The unit also introduces the world of work, linking earning money to a variety of career options. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on jobs that align with their skills and interests, and to understand that uncertainty and changing aspirations are normal.
The final lesson challenges stereotypes around careers, encouraging pupils to set goals without being limited by expectations and to value their unique talents. Completing this unit prepares children for Year 4, where they will explore value for money, money safety, and influences on career pathways.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s RSE & PSHE economic wellbeing teacher videos, supporting money management, emotional resilience, and inclusive career exploration.
