Applying prior knowledge to make a child-friendly toy
This teacher CPD video provides step-by-step guidance for delivering a two-lesson sequence from year 1 of the Kapow Primary Design and Technology scheme where children design, make, and evaluate pull-along toys. Building on previous lessons focused on wheels and bases, pupils now apply their knowledge to create toys tailored for a specific user—toddlers aged one to four—developing their understanding of product purpose and user-centred design.
From creative concepts to practical prototypes
Teachers are shown how to guide children through identifying user needs, refining design criteria, and translating those into practical decisions such as colour choices, materials, and decorations. The video models each stage of the making process, including assembling recycled materials, painting, and decorating, while reinforcing safe construction techniques using masking tape and appropriate materials.
Evaluating products with purpose and safety in mind
To complete the unit, children evaluate their toys against both aesthetic and mechanical criteria, considering how well their products meet the needs of young children. This CPD video helps teachers model thoughtful evaluation and discussion around materials, safety, and improvements—making it an ideal resource for developing critical design thinking and meaningful reflection in primary DT lessons.
