Investigating how our local woodland is used

This Geography scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering a structured outdoor fieldwork enquiry focused on observing and analysing how local woodlands are used.

Pupils work in supervised groups to gather data through a range of methods: tally charts to record activity types, questionnaires to interview members of the public, annotated sketches of woodland features, and route maps using a provided woodland base map. Safety is prioritised with pre-fieldwork risk assessment and route planning discussions.

A wide range of fieldwork and map-reading skills are developed, and children are encouraged to reflect on the public use of natural spaces. Pupils analyse and present their findings using bar charts, collated quotes, sketches, and annotated maps on group presentation boards.

Teachers are supported in managing logistics, ensuring safety and adult supervision, and preparing resources such as maps and dialogue prompts for interviews.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Fieldwork videos and develops pupils’ data collection, critical thinking, and communication skills.
