Introducing the pull-along toy project

This Design and technology scheme of work video supports teachers in delivering a Year 1 lesson focused on how wheels and axles help objects move. It accompanies a unit on pull-along toys and guides teachers through building a simple base using templates and everyday materials.

This video helps teachers feel confident supporting the children as they explore and refine their structures in preparation for designing their final pull-along toys. It demonstrates how to support the children with cutting, assembling and testing their wheels and axles. It models key techniques such as puncturing holes safely, attaching axles securely and identifying common issues like sliding or wobbling wheels.
