Exploring tone

In this Art and design scheme of work video, the concept of tone is explored. Tone is how artists use light and dark to add depth, contrast and realism to their work.

The video explains how tone helps transform 2D shapes into 3D forms by carefully shading from light to dark. Pupils learn that darker tones can push areas back, while lighter tones bring areas forward, creating a sense of depth and perspective. High contrast in tone can also help draw attention to a focal point or add drama to a piece.

Children will explore the difference between tone and colour through activities such as shading practice, tonal gradation scales, and observational drawing. They also try monochromatic art to focus on tone without the distraction of multiple colours. The video also suggests how pupils can use a range of materials to explore tone. Teachers are encouraged to build on their own understanding of tone, alongside teaching it.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Exploring tone, texture and proportion unit.
