Creating symmetrical flip patterns

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help Key stage 2 pupils create flip patterns using their own artwork. It explores how to apply knowledge of reflection and symmetry, guiding pupils step by step through tracing, flipping, and transferring images to build a complete symmetrical design. The video demonstrates each stage, from preparing tracing paper and aligning quadrants to reinforcing outlines in pen and adding colour with pencils or pastels.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original LKS2 Art and design resources. It breaks the process down clearly, ensuring teachers feel confident in leading pupils to combine creativity with mathematical concepts, producing striking flip pattern artwork in lessons.
