Sikh courage and commitment

This Religion and worldviews video supports teachers in guiding pupils to explore why some people dedicate their lives to their worldview, using Sikh history as an example of courage, equality and spiritual commitment. The video sets out the challenges faced by Sikhs during the Mughal Empire and introduces the leadership of Guru Gobind Singh. It describes the events of the Punjabi festival Vaisakhi in 1699, when five volunteers stepped forward, demonstrating humility, bravery and a willingness to devote their lives to God and the wellbeing of others.

Teachers gain insight into Sikh identity markers, sometimes referred to as the Five Ks, and the Dastar, and their connection to discipline, justice, and service. The content also illustrates the concept of the saint-soldier, teaching Sikhs to act with compassion, defend others and stand firm against injustice. This supports teachers in leading meaningful discussions about commitment, sacrifice and what shapes a person’s actions and worldview.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore different beliefs, values and traditions, developing respect and understanding for people of all faiths and worldviews.
