Encouraging children to harness their imagination

This Art and design scheme of work video assists teachers in guiding children through imaginative drawing, using line, shape and tone to bring creative ideas to life.

In this lesson, pupils are encouraged to visualise and draw a plant from their imagination. A poem can be used to spark ideas. Children will visualise the shapes, colours and textures of a growing plant, building a mental picture. Working in groups, they discuss their ideas, using the lines of the poem to inspire drawings of imaginary plants. If any children struggle, encourage them to think of real plants, unusual environments, or fantastic settings like outer space or underwater worlds.

Teachers will exhibit drawing from imagination, sharing their thought process aloud to support creative thinking. By narrating choices – such as using jagged lines for thorns or soft shading for glowing leaves – children learn how to reflect and make decisions about their artwork.
