Supporting Lessons 4 and 5 of the Drawing: Expressing ideas unit

This Art and Design scheme of work video supports the final two lessons of Kapow Primary’s Year 6 Drawing: Expressing ideas unit, where pupils bring together everything they’ve learnt about street art and begin to take creative ownership of their artwork.

After listening to the design brief, children are encouraged to consider their audience, location and message – using these to make independent decisions about composition, drawing techniques, colours and materials. As artists, they’ll justify their choices, and annotating plans will help make their thinking visible.

Teachers will support pupils by giving them freedom to problem solve, experiment and take risks with their ideas. Set up a resource table to encourage independence and offer gentle support through prompts, questions and encouragement. Promote peer discussion and feedback as another way to build confidence and develop ideas.
