Creating mini installation spaces

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces a project inspired by artist Cai Guo-Qiang, known for using explosions in his artwork to create dramatic effects.

Pupils work in groups to transform cardboard boxes into miniature installation spaces, experimenting with a range of materials to create their own artwork inspired by Cai Guo-Qiang. The boxes are then photographed to appear like life-sized rooms, helping pupils imagine how their installations would feel to a visitor. Children use stencils inside the box and experiment with a range of expressive techniques and materials.

The lesson encourages creative risk-taking but working safely is still important. Pupils wear aprons, and the space should be prepared in advance. Safety goggles are essential if using powdered materials.
