Reading challenge - language detectives

This French video introduces teachers to a reading challenge that develops pupils’ decoding skills and understanding of language structures. Using activities such as a Jumble Word Starter and a ‘What’s in the bag?’ logic puzzle, pupils practise recognising key letter strings, spotting cognates, and applying rules for gender and number. The task encourages them to explain their strategies, build vocabulary, and attempt structured sentences, often adding colour or size details to show greater confidence.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s French – school. It supports teachers in fostering independent language learning by guiding pupils to work out meanings through context and patterns rather than direct translation. The lesson also offers opportunities for creative extensions, such as designing new puzzles, and provides a framework for developing both reading and writing skills in a fun, collaborative way.
