Understanding plant adaptations and rainforest layers

This Geography scheme of work video equips teachers to introduce pupils to vegetation types and adaptations within the tropical rainforest biome; the lesson focuses on how plants and animals are uniquely suited to thrive in their specific layer of the rainforest.

Teachers are guided through clear visuals of key plant features such as buttress roots, drip tip leaves, smooth bark, and lianas, which help plants survive the rainforest’s hot, wet climate. The video then explores the four rainforest layers—forest floor, understory, canopy, and emergent—detailing the distinct characteristics of each, and the animals and plants found there.
