Teaching mixing techniques

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces teachers to the progression of mixing skills in primary cooking lessons, equipping them with the knowledge to support children using different techniques to combine ingredients effectively. It covers early mixing and mashing in Reception, introduces kneading, rubbing in and whisking in Key stage 1 and develops to combining for texture and folding with care in Key stage 2. Teachers are guided through the purpose of each method and how to model them clearly for the children.

This video is part of our Cooking and nutrition resources. It simplifies food preparation techniques and tool use, helping teachers feel confident and prepared to support the children in developing mixing and stirring skills in the lessons and units below.
