Teaching accurate ingredient measuring

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces teachers to the progression of measuring skills in primary cooking lessons. It equips them with the knowledge to help the children measure ingredients accurately for successful recipes. The video covers early spoon-measuring activities in Reception, measuring liquids and simple fractions in Key stage 1, and introduces jugs and digital scales in Key stage 2. By Key stage 2, the children are encouraged to work more independently, including using analogue scales to calculate more precise measurements.

This video is part of our Cooking and nutrition resources. It simplifies food preparation techniques and tool use, helping teachers feel confident and prepared to support the children in developing sifting skills in the lessons and units below.
