Teaching accurate ingredient measuring

This Design and technology video introduces teachers to the progression of measuring skills in primary cooking lessons, equipping them with the knowledge to help children measure ingredients accurately for successful recipes. It covers early spoon-measuring activities in Reception, measuring liquids and simple fractions in Key Stage 1, and introduces jugs and digital scales in lower Key Stage 2. By upper Key Stage 2, children are encouraged to work more independently, including using analogue scales to calculate more precise measurements.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology – Teacher skills videos for Food and Nutrition. It simplifies practical measuring techniques, ensuring teachers feel confident and prepared to help children build key food preparation and maths skills in the lesson and unit below.
