Making paint from natural ingredients

This Art and Design scheme of work video introduces a lesson in which pupils paints and cave wall backgrounds using natural materials.

They’ll start by exploring different types of mark making. Using leaves, twigs, and other natural objects, they’ll experiment by rubbing, stamping or brushing across the paper. The pupils will then make the paints, colouring them with natural materials. They can then create a cave wall to paint on top of, using cardboard.

This lesson encourages pupils to experiment with natural art and imagine what art might’ve looked like thousands of years ago.

The video is part of Year 3 Painting and mixed media: Prehistoric painting unit.
