Exploring pop-up book mechanisms

This Design and technology video introduces the key mechanisms the pupils will use when designing and making their own pop-up books. Although the pupils focus on planning their storybooks in the first lesson, they will need to see examples of the different types of movement they can include.

The video demonstrates how to construct simple mechanisms, including sliders, fixed and loose pivot levers and pop-up structures. It models how to create linear movement using spacers, how to use layers to hide mechanisms and how to make holes for pivots safely. Multiple examples show how pop-up steps can be made and adapted to suit different page designs.

This resource helps teachers feel confident demonstrating each mechanism to the class and prepares pupils for designing purposeful and functional pop-up pages in the following lessons.
