Designing mechanical car kits

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces the final stage of this Year 4 unit in which the children design and create mechanical car kits, applying their knowledge of mechanisms and materials from earlier lessons. It explains how to write clear design criteria, carry out market research, sketch kit designs with material lists and costs and draw exploded diagrams. Teachers are guided through the full design-make-evaluate cycle including peer testing, customer feedback and comparing performance to earlier prototypes.

The video simplifies the design process so teachers feel confident and well prepared to support the children in creating effective, testable car kits in the lesson and unit below.
