Exploring structures and stability

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces teachers to three different approaches Key stage 1 pupils can use to construct Baby Bear’s chair, using paper and tape, straws and pipe cleaners, or recycled materials. It builds on pupils’ prior knowledge of structures while introducing new techniques for stability and design. The video demonstrates each method, from rolling and joining paper tubes to linking straws with pipe cleaners or assembling recycled objects, encouraging pupils to experiment creatively while exploring strength, balance, and stability.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology resources. It supports teachers in helping pupils apply construction skills, develop problem-solving strategies, and understand how different materials and joining techniques affect stability, while fostering creativity and independence in lessons like the ones below.
