Teacher video: Making a matching slider game

CPD badge

Making a game with a slider mechanism

In this Design and technology video, the teacher is guided through creating a matching slider game using paper or card, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to guide Year 1 children to develop their own games.

The video shows how to make the base by cutting slots into an A5 card and design sliders by drawing boxes for letters and pictures on a long, narrow piece of card woven through the slots. Once assembled, players can slide letters into the windows to form words that match the corresponding images. The game can be adapted by changing the matching elements or increasing the difficulty with additional sliders. The emphasis of the learning in this unit is on experimentation and creativity in game design.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which provide guidance and support to help teachers develop confidence and subject knowledge when delivering practical lessons.
