Using language detective skills in science contexts
This French video introduces teachers to a cross-curricular lesson where pupils use language-learning strategies and scientific knowledge to solve sequencing puzzles in French and Dutch. Without needing prior knowledge of these languages, pupils work collaboratively to match captions with life cycle images, using cognates, sentence structure, and logic to make connections. The activity builds discussion, deduction skills, and confidence in tackling unfamiliar vocabulary.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s French – vocabulary. It provides adaptable resources, including picture and caption card sets, opportunities for peer teaching, and a final Swedish sentence-building challenge to explore grammar patterns across languages. The focus is on developing strategies for understanding meaning, encouraging pupils to apply these skills to French and beyond, fostering lifelong language learning habits.
