French cultural treasures

This French video introduces teachers to a lesson that uses language learning as a way to promote intercultural understanding and begin to challenge stereotypes about France and other French-speaking countries. Pupils work with the simple structure il y a (“there is/are”) as both a question and a statement, practising intonation to turn a phrase into a question. The starter “odd one out” task encourages children to decide which items, places, or people truly belong to France, leading to discussion about perceptions and national identity.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s French scheme – vocabulary. The main activity asks children to sort real and “red herring” treasures from a picture board, building list sentences in French to describe them. Teachers are guided to highlight grammar points such as using en for feminine country nouns and au for masculine ones. The inclusion of examples like the Statue of Liberty replica in Paris helps pupils recognise the global links of French culture. The lesson finishes by inviting children to suggest treasures for Great Britain, reinforcing intercultural awareness and setting the stage for the next lesson on climate.
