French survey on travel to school

This French video introduces teachers to a cross-curricular lesson that combines speaking, listening, and writing in French with a maths investigation, global learning, and Healthy Schools themes. Pupils plan and conduct a survey about how they travel to school, then present their findings entirely in French. The activity builds on prior vocabulary for asking and answering questions about travel, while introducing additional transport words, including borrowed terms such as à pied. The flexible survey format allows children to gather data in different ways, from paired interviews to whole-class questioning, before using the results to create a pictogram and compare travel methods for health and environmental impact.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s French – school. It provides step-by-step guidance on linking the survey with wider curriculum themes such as Walk to School Week or data handling in maths. The lesson also offers opportunities to extend learning by comparing travel habits in other countries, supported by resource links to images of unusual journeys to school. The session concludes with a cultural link to the French TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse), introducing pupils to its speed, network, and connections across France and beyond, while consolidating colour, number, and the use of the verb aller in practical contexts.
