Introducing John Singer Sargent

This Art and design scheme of work video supports a lesson which helps children explore the emotional and human side of war through the study of a famous painting.

The lesson centres on Gassed by John Singer Sargent. Pupils are guided to examine the artwork closely, reflect on their emotional responses, and discuss its themes of teamwork, leadership, injury and support. The subject matter may prompt strong or difficult feelings, so any questions must be handled sensitively.

The main activity involves recreating the painting as a tableau. Working in groups, pupils take on the roles of the figures in the artwork to better understand the experience being shown. This activity supports British values and the SMSC agenda, while deepening pupils’ understanding of how artists communicate meaning through imagery.
