Creating a giant spider sculpture

This Art and design scheme of work video supports a collaborative sculpture project where the whole class creates a giant spider, inspired by the work of artist Louise Bourgeois.

The sculpture is built entirely from newspaper and masking tape, and will take at least two lessons to complete. Pupils work in groups to create rolled paper struts, which form the legs and body of the spider. The video shows how to roll newspaper tightly from the corner, securing each roll with masking tape. Once pupils have made enough struts, they construct the legs by joining five rolls together using masking tape. Each leg has two parts: an upper and lower section. Groups can work on different legs, joining them to the body once complete. To make the body, around ten tightly rolled struts are taped together into a bundle. Pupils repeat this to form the second body section and join them securely.
