Observing and drawing

In this Art and design scheme of work video, pupils are guided through a step-by-step drawing activity to help them observe closely and draw with care and confidence.

The video encourages children to look carefully at the object they’re drawing, identifying the basic shapes before sketching lightly on the page. Pupils are reminded that it is okay to make changes to their drawing. Once the shapes are in place, pupils refine their drawing by adding more accurate lines and extra detail.

The final stage introduces texture and tone. Pupils use their shading skills to show darker and lighter areas, exploring techniques such as smooth shading, mark making or changing pressure. They think about how to show the texture of the object using different types of lines. To finish, pupils will reflect on their drawing, making any final changes to improve their work.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 2 Understanding tone and texture unit. It helps children learn to draw with accuracy, expression and care.
