Understanding how food choices affect the planet
In this Geography video, teachers are guided on explaining the environmental impact of food production and helping the children understand the wider consequences of everyday choices. The lesson supports learning about climate change, global food systems and sustainability in an age-appropriate and thought-provoking way.
The video revisits biomes and why certain foods grow in different climates, before exploring food miles and the environmental cost of importing food. Teachers are shown key impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, deforestation and fossil fuel use in food production and transport. Examples include the carbon footprint of meat, dairy and everyday items like bread and baked goods.
Teachers are supported in introducing practical, positive actions the children can take, such as reducing waste, limiting meat or dairy intake and considering vegetarian or vegan options without enforcing dietary change. The focus is on helping the children understand that small changes can add up to a meaningful difference.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography sustainability teacher videos. It enables teachers to explore important climate-related topics in a balanced and practical way.
