Understanding how food choices affect the planet.

This Geography scheme of work video helps teachers explain the environmental impact of food production and introduces pupils to the wider consequences of everyday choices. It supports learning around climate change, global food systems, and sustainability in a way that is age-appropriate and thought-provoking.

The video revisits the concept of biomes and why certain foods grow in different climates, before exploring food miles and how importing food increases environmental cost. Teachers are guided through key impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions from livestock (notably methane), deforestation, and the use of fossil fuels in food production and transport. Examples include the carbon footprint of meat and dairy, as well as everyday items like bread and baked goods. Teachers are supported in introducing realistic, positive actions, such as reducing waste, limiting meat or dairy intake, and considering vegetarian or vegan choices without enforcing dietary change. The focus is on helping pupils understand that small changes can add up to a meaningful difference.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography – Environmental impact and sustainability teacher videos. It enables teachers to explore important climate-related topics in a balanced and practical way.
