The an nasal sound

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It introduces pupils to one of the key nasal vowel sounds in French, made when the letters a, n and other combinations like en or on appear together. Pupils are shown examples such as un triangle, une ambulance, en février, and novembre, and are guided to notice how the air flows through both the nose and mouth at the same time when making the sound.

The narrative continues with mouth mechanics, giving pupils practical tricks to master the sound, such as holding the nose while saying it to feel the difference. They are then challenged to listen for the nasal vowel in short phrases like Chantal habite en France and Dans une enveloppe il y a un blanc. The video finishes by encouraging pupils to spot the sound in other French words they encounter in lessons, helping them build stronger listening and speaking skills in phonics.
