Making a healthy bolognese in the classroom

This Design and technology scheme of work video supports teachers in guiding the children through the safe preparation of a bolognese sauce. The children build on their learning from earlier lessons, where they adapted a basic recipe for improved nutrition. In this lesson, they bring it to life by cooking their own version. The video models each step clearly, helping teachers lead a practical and enjoyable cooking session.

The video includes key safety guidance, such as knife skills, handwashing and avoiding cross-contamination, while showing the pupils how to prepare ingredients like onions, garlic and carrots. As their sauces cook, the children design creative labels for their jars, linking food preparation with art and design. The activity offers a real-world, cross-curricular experience that builds confidence, independence and teamwork in the primary classroom.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and make their own products.
