Food choices and belief
This Religion and worldviews video equips teachers to guide pupils in exploring how fasting and dietary choices can express beliefs, values and identity across different worldviews. The video walks through key examples, including Ramadan, Lent and Yom Kippur, to show how fasting can support self-discipline, reflection, empathy and a sense of connection with God or community. It highlights the importance of focusing on why people may fast, rather than the practical details, and supports teachers in framing these practices sensitively and inclusively.
The video also clarifies how dietary restrictions can stem from religious teachings, ethical commitments or health needs. Teachers gain clear explanations of halal and kosher practices, as well as vegetarian and vegan choices, and medical requirements such as allergies and intolerances, helping them address misconceptions and ensure respectful discussions. Guidance is provided on encouraging pupils to make links between different examples, draw on personal responses featured in the lesson and reflect on what these choices might reveal about someone’s worldview.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore different beliefs, values and traditions, developing respect and understanding for people of all faiths and worldviews.
