Teacher tips for pneumatics

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces Year 3 teachers to pneumatics through simple, engaging experiments that help the children understand how trapped, compressed air can create movement and power mechanisms.

The video models two classroom challenges: using air to lift a book and raise a hinged box’s lid. These activities provide a tangible way for the children to explore scientific thinking, prediction, and cause and effect. The concepts are explored using technical vocabulary such as compression, mechanism and air pressure.

Tips are included for using low-cost or recycled materials, such as syringes, balloon pumps and tubing, supporting flexible, inclusive delivery in any class.
