Being a language detective
This Spanish Kapow teacher video supports you in delivering a lesson that introduces pupils to language detective skills, helping them decode Spanish using logic, context and pattern spotting. Pupils will be encouraged to use visual clues, gesture, familiar phrases and cognates – words that look and mean the same in both English and Spanish – to unlock meaning and build confidence in their early reading. Through songs, rhymes and everyday scenarios like greetings and counting, pupils begin to appreciate that communication is more than just words. These activities lay the groundwork for understanding phonics, grammar, and spelling, all through active, meaningful exploration.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme of work – vocabulary. It guides you through activities such as the chocolate rhyme, the tomato tower challenge, and a short letter from a Spanish-speaking child named Sofia, all designed to engage children while developing key language comprehension strategies. You’ll gain practical support for helping pupils make links between words, spot patterns, and transfer existing English reading skills to Spanish. By nurturing these language detective strategies early on, children are better equipped to become independent and enthusiastic learners of Spanish.
