Understanding pattern

In this Art and design scheme of work video, pupils develop their understanding of pattern by exploring how natural, organic shapes can be used to create repeatable designs.

They’re introduced to a simple, paper-based method that designers use to plan how a pattern might look when repeated across a large area. While modern software can automate this process, the hands-on technique builds creative skills. This video introduces the processes of creating a tile, linked to the related pupil video.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Fabric of nature unit. giving pupils the tools to explore repetition, design and creativity in an engaging way.
