Building a branching database

In this Computing video, teachers are guided through a practical activity to help the children understand how computers sort and categorise information using branching databases.

The video demonstrates how the children can begin by organising picture cards of animals in a row and placing yes/no cards beneath them. Using a series of numbered yes/no questions, the animals are sorted into two groups, continuing until each animal is placed in its own unique group. The video highlights how teachers can support the children to make careful choices, encouraging discussion and reasoning, while showing how computers use a similar system to organise and search data efficiently.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing videos, supporting teachers to develop the children’s understanding of data handling and logical reasoning.
