Asking and answering questions

This French video introduces teachers to a final lesson in the topic that focuses on paired speaking activities. The key aim is for children to practise asking and answering closed questions in French to extract factual information. The lesson highlights that, just as in English, a statement can become a question simply by raising the intonation at the end. This helps children to see that forming questions in French doesn’t always mean changing word order. They also revisit useful question structures, such as asking a name, identifying hot or cold planets, and practising larger numbers to build on prior learning.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s French scheme – vocabulary. It encourages flexible teaching: while designed as a speaking task, the activity could also be extended into written descriptions for peers to read and draw from. By using alien world prompts, children are motivated to ask and answer in French, while creative learners can extend the task into independent writing or artwork. The video also suggests capturing speaking and listening through recordings, making it a useful assessment opportunity. This lesson neatly integrates language learning with science and art, helping to end the topic on an imaginative and practical note.
