Building confidence to teach printmaking

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to four key printmaking techniques; block, mono, collagraph, and lino printing, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to explore each process in the classroom. With hands-on demonstrations and practical guidance, the video highlights how printmaking develops pupils’ skills in pattern, texture, line, tone, and composition.

The video explains how each method can be adapted for different ages and abilities, from using simple objects and polystyrene tiles to experimenting with collaged textures and carving lino alternatives. Safety and material advice are included, such as tool recommendations, ink vs. paint comparison, and resource substitutions for inking plates.

Teachers are encouraged to foster creativity by offering varied printmaking experiences and enabling pupils to explore their own styles. The guidance supports creative risk-taking and builds confidence in managing printmaking sessions that are both structured and experimental.
