Spanish phonics – The /k/ sound (k/c/qu)

This Spanish scheme of work video introduces pupils to the ‘k’ sound in Spanish, exploring how it can be represented by the letters k, c and qu. While the ‘k’ sound may feel familiar, the range of spellings used in Spanish makes this an important focus for reading, pronunciation, and spelling confidence.

Pupils are guided through examples of each spelling pattern and practise “mouth mechanics” to pronounce the ‘k’ sound clearly — using the back of the tongue against the soft palate to release a crisp, voiceless consonant. The video includes modelling, repetition, and sound-spotting activities to build accurate listening and speaking skills.

Learners develop an understanding of when different spellings are used in Spanish words, supporting both phonics and vocabulary development.

This video is designed to help pupils build strong phoneme–grapheme knowledge, improve pronunciation and become more confident language learners.
