Understanding pattern recognition

This Computing scheme of work introduces pupils to the concept of pattern recognition – a computational thinking skill that helps pupils solve problems by identifying similarities and repeated sequences.

The video explores how recognising patterns supports understanding across a range of familiar contexts. From spotting sequences in traffic lights and times tables to following repeated steps when tying shoelaces or singing songs, pupils learn how patterns help predict what comes next and simplify complex tasks.

The video also demonstrates how pattern recognition plays a key role in coding. Using Scratch, it shows how pupils can identify repeating actions and use loops to make their code more efficient and easier to manage. It highlights how spotting patterns not only supports writing cleaner code but also encourages pupils to remix and personalise existing projects with confidence.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Computing Computational thinking unit. It gives teachers clear, practical guidance to help pupils build strong problem-solving skills by recognising patterns — both in the real world and in their computing projects.
