Understanding decomposition

This Computing scheme of work video introduces Year 4 pupils to decomposition, a key computational thinking skill that helps the children break down complex problems into smaller, manageable parts. It shows how this approach can be applied across a range of everyday and classroom tasks to build logical thinking step by step.

The video uses relatable examples to illustrate decomposition in action, from solving puzzles and organising daily routines to tackling homework and cleaning a room. It then explores how the same strategy supports computing, particularly in coding, where projects such as designing a simple Scratch game become clearer and more achievable when broken into smaller stages. This video supports the children in developing independence and problem-solving skills in Computing.
