Guidance for how to set up and use saws safely to cut wood

In this Design and technology video, the pupils learn how to use a saw and bench hook to saw wooden length in a safe way.

The video introduces saws as tools used mainly for cutting wood and explains that there are different types, including hand saws and power saws. It identifies the main parts of a saw, such as the handle, blade, back and teeth, and explains how they work. The video then focuses on safe use of hand saws, covering rules like securing the wood, keeping fingers clear, wearing appropriate clothing and using controlled, smooth movements. It also highlights good habits after sawing, such as placing the saw safely and cleaning up dust properly to reduce health risks.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and make their own products.
