Making a sculpture from paper tubes

This Art and design scheme of work video introduces pupils to sculpture by showing them how to create their own 3D artwork using rolled paper tubes.

It explains that sculpture is a type of art made in three dimensions, meaning it has height, width and depth. Unlike a flat drawing, a sculpture can be viewed and touched from different sides.

The video demonstrates how to roll paper into tubes, either by hand or around a cylinder shape. Pupils are encouraged to notice tube shapes in the classroom and think about how to vary the height, width and colour of their rolls. There are two ways to attach tubes to a card base, either by standing them in thick PVA glue or by making four small cuts to create flaps that can be glued down. Pupils can try out both methods as they build their sculpture. They can add detail by joining tubes, cutting into them, or decorating with drawing and colour.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 1 Paper play unit.
