The story of the first Panj Pyare
This Religion and worldviews video retells the dramatic moment in 1699 when Guru Gobind Singh asked the Sikh community to show complete courage and trust in God. The pupils follow the story as one Sikh, and then four more, bravely stepped forward when the Guru asked who was willing to die for their faith. The crowd watched in shock as each volunteer entered the tent and the Guru emerged with a bloodied sword, only to discover that all five men were alive, transformed and honoured for their extraordinary devotion.
The video shows how these five became the Panj Pyare, the ‘five beloved ones’, and the first members of the Khalsa: a community committed to high moral and spiritual standards. It explains how Guru Gobind Singh created this group as saint-soldiers, dedicated to defending justice, protecting others and living with deep compassion and humility. The pupils also discover that Sikhs remember these events at Vaisakhi and that some continue to choose to join the Khalsa today as a sign of faith and dedication.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore different beliefs, values and traditions, developing respect and understanding for people of all faiths and worldviews.
