Pupil video: Testing the stiffness of dowel

Exploring how the thickness of a piece of dowel affects how flexible it is.

In this Design and technology video, the pupils are introduced to dowel as a thin, wooden cylinder and make predictions about which thickness of dowel is the stiffest.

The video shows three lengths of dowel of different thicknesses and a test to show how stiff or flexible each piece is by hanging weights from the centre in a basket. The pupils are encouraged to predict whether the thinner dowel will be more or less stiff than the medium dowel and then make a similar prediction about the thickest dowel.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and make their own products.
